Three 'No-No's Theme of the Week: Witnessing That's Not Weird Dick Staub Sunday, June 20, 2004

Who Said It
Dick Staub's daily radio show on Seattle's KGNW (also broadcast on cable's Total Living Network) has been on the air since 1987. After years of interviewing the shapers of American culture, Dick says he believes there's a vibrant ongoing conversation about faith going on in today's culture. It is often unlinked from organized religion and usually missed by the religious subculture. Part of his mission, he says, is listening to and facilitating that cultural conversation. What He Said
If we hope to re-enter the world we're trying to reach, Christians should avoid these approaches:
1. Cocooning. We want to separate ourselves from evil influences, so we start circling the wagons to keep the "good guys" in and the "bad guys" out. The only way that the community of faith grows is either biological or through an accidental seeker.
2. Becoming combative. We develop an "us" versus "them" mentality. The temptation we face in a society in moral decline is to enter it only in the spirit of hostile confrontation. A combative approach will seldom persuade people to consider God's redemptive love found in Jesus Christ.
3. Conforming. This is total identification. Christians conform to the values and behaviors of our society. We blend in like chameleons, to the point where little to no difference exists between us and the world in terms of how our lives look and the values we live by.
