24/7 Theme of the Week: Rest Is Not Optional Don Whitney Sunday, June 27, 2004
 1 of 1

Who Said It
Don Whitney teaches spiritual formation at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Kansas City. He grew up in Osceola, Arkansas, where he worked for the radio station his father managed. Don was active in sports throughout high school and college. Before going to Midwestern, he served for 14 years as a pastor in suburban Chicago. His wife, Caffy, ministers from home as a women's Bible study teacher, artist, and freelance illustrator. What He Said
A recent front-page article in USA Today begins, "24/7 isn't just an expression, it's a cultural earthquake that is changing the way we live." Stores stay open around the clock, e-mail piles up, and websites wait to be explored. Only the need for sleep keeps us from staying busy the whole 24 hours.
Years ago, however, culture provided a change of pace on Sunday. Few merchants opened their doors, which meant few people worked. Today, almost nothing restrains us from being as busy on the Lord's Day as on the other six days of the week.
On that day we should enjoy a sense of closure to one week and freshness of another. For that to happen, however, we must erect walls that hold back the unfinished backlog of life on one side and the appealing opportunities provided by technology and prosperity on the other. We must do it for the health of our souls and bodies, for the blessing of our families and relationships, and for the building of the church and the kingdom of God.
