I have enjoyed many a good talk as miles of hiking trail passed underfoot, walking side by side with companions-of-the-moment. However, since I don't hike often enough to keep in top shape, conversation isn't always possible. The terrain becomes steep or rocky, and I find myself falling a little behind, short of breath. It becomes difficult to talk as our minds focus on making it up a hill, or scrambling over a patch of loose rock. When we reach the top, we take a moment to catch our breath, and then continue—both the hike and the conversation.
There are times in our lives when we walk with God, side by side, talking freely, sharing and enjoying close companionship. But we also hit difficult times and find ourselves struggling to keep up. Suddenly it seems Christ isn't walking by our side, but going on ahead, and we see His back instead of His face.
In those times we can take comfort in knowing that even as Christ leads ahead, He has covered the same ground we tread, and that there will come a place of rest. The difficult stretch will eventually end, and we will again walk side by side, speaking freely. I need only press on and follow where He leads.
