Key Bible Verses: Break out in praise and sing for joy! (Psalm 98:4). Bonus Reading:Psalm 150:1—6

My wife says she's going to wear a leotard next time we visit the Verbo church in Quito, Ecuador. Worshiping there, she says, is a better workout than going to the gym.

[Today's Bonus Reading] names some instruments to use for praising. The Verbo people add guitars of all shapes and sizes, synthesizers, castanets, drums, and more. They sing enthusiastically, clap, and "move." Young people run up and down the aisles waving banners. People hug, laugh, shout, and dance.

Standing in a worship service there one Sunday morning, we felt an outward joy that lightened our hearts and refreshed our spirits. It was so very … Latin. Nobody cared that the service went on for hours.

I smiled as I recalled my childhood church in Sydney, Australia. At Campsie Baptist, the men wore dark suits; the women wore hats. A pump organ wheezed out the only accompaniment to stately old hymns. The service started right at 11 a.m., and woe to the visiting preacher who went beyond 12:15 p.m.

The Campsie and Verbo churches were both very meaningful to me. But, oh, were they different!

My Response: How can I value my own worship tradition without belittling others?

Thought to Apply: We are never alone. God has His people and there is that bond between them that revives the sagging spirit and confirms the love of God.

—Allan Emery (Massachusetts businessman)
