When I was in my early 30s, I asked my 40-something pastor a question that had been bothering me: "Lately, Bill, I've been struggling with my thought life—you know, thinking about things I shouldn't. When will I grow out of it?" I thought he must have a quick answer, a snappy solution.
Without hesitating he replied, "You won't." That wasn't the response I expected. I wanted him to say:
"If you memorize these ten verses, your mind will be as pure as the driven snow.""I know this book on spiritual discipline that's just the ticket. I'm sure it'll help you as much as it helped me.""As soon as you hit your forties, you won't think about these things as often. It'll go away. Just relax."
No such luck. Bill was right, of course. You can't turn a street corner or flip on a TV without running up against a provocatively dressed young woman. Bill-boards portray larger-than-life blondes draped across car hoods trying to convince us that one comes with the other. Sex sells, and—judging by the beer-and-bikini TV ads—society is giving us the hard pitch.
