'Saved?' Theme of the Week: What We're Saved From Donald A. Carson Sunday, May 2, 2004
 1 of 1

Who Said It
Donald Carson grew up in France as a missionary kid, and majored in chemistry at McGill University in Toronto. But he turned to theological studies, earning his doctorate in New Testament at Cambridge University.
Don has served as a pastor. But most of his career has been devoted to teaching—at Northwest Baptist Theological College and Seminary in Vancouver, British Columbia, and—for the last 25 years—at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, Illinois. He regularly visits Britain to teach. What He Said
What does the verb to save mean in our culture?
When my son was in high school he wore T-shirts with various slogans, some of which were right on the edge. One in particular had a picture of a soccer goal. The ball has come in and the goalie is making a diving save. But the goalie is dressed like Jesus, and underneath are the words "Jesus saves." If you're a sports fan, it means just that.
If you're in finance, on the other hand, it's what you do at the bank. If you're into the digital world, it's that which, if you forget to do it, means you lose a lot of data.
The meaning of the name Jesus is "The Lord saves." An angel told Joseph, "You are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins" (Matthew 1:21). English author William Cowper wrote about Jesus' death, "Sin is cut down by this triumph of grace. Christ's bloody cross is the hope of our race."
