Men of Integrity, May/June 2004

My Covenant Partners
Theme of the Week: Sticking Together
Sunday, May 23

Who Said It
A.C. Green
Before he retired from basketball in 2001, forward A.C. Green was the Iron Man of the NBA, having played 16 seasons—and fouling out only three times! Coaches of the L. A. Lakers, Phoenix Suns, Dallas Mavericks, and Miami Heat valued him as a steady team member.

A.C. began and remains up-front about his faith. As a single throughout his career, he both practiced and preached sexual abstinence. Now married, A.C. oversees his youth foundation and business interests.

What He Said
My Covenant Partners
You can't always choose your leaders and teammates, but you can choose those you draw closest to. In the spiritual battle you have to know who you can depend on. Johnny-Be-Good who doesn't want to get his hands dirty isn't a good backup in a fight. I want someone who knows how to combat the darkness, how to get inside a situation and pray until it changes.

I can call on [my eight covenant men] to stand with me, pray for me, toss ideas around, and give me spiritual counsel. From my brothers I get the antidote I need to counteract the enemy's lies. If I start to believe Satan's trash talking, my brothers will correct me. When I feel down, low on faith, my brothers pick me up or just give me a kick in the backside. They know me and what I need. The Devil wants me to lose my effectiveness, to lose sight of my purpose. I use the weapon of God-given friendships to thwart his attacks.

0  Prayer for the Week 0

Lord, help me to be there for other men, and to honestly admit I need them to be there for me.
