Key Bible Verse: "I will no longer show love to the people of Israel or forgive them" (Hosea 1:6). Bonus Reading:Hebrews 4:13–16
I had been given some really tough homework. Since my brother was as bright at math as I was dumb, I asked Samir, who was working on some scientific experiment, "You know about algebra, don't you?"
"Need me to do your homework again?"
"I've got to solve these 20 problems for tomorrow."
"Show me." Samir put down his instrument, scanned my schoolbook, handed it back, and shrugged. "Sure, I'll help you—on one condition."
I should have known. "What condition?"
"That you come with me to the evangelistic campaign tonight."
"But why?" I said, calculating how many hours I'd lose.
"I just want you to come, that's all. Of course, if you want to do your math homework by yourself …"
"Okay," I said, "but I leave as soon as the sermon's over." He put his hand out; we shook on it.
So I ended up hearing an evangelist preach on how the time for mercy was now, for a judgment day was coming when God would shut the door on us as He had on Israel. The message [of today's Key Bible Verse] stunned me.
"Okay, you can go home now," Samir said. But I was already on my way to the front to find mercy.
