Before Dad died, I told him how deeply grateful I was for his service to our country during World War II—surviving the carnage at Anzio, then battling up through Italy and into Germany.
I was impressed by how he treated people regardless of their economic class or racial background. Dad sold both new and used cars. Those who lived in a prestigious neighborhood nearby, surrounding a lake, usually bought new cars. When visiting his firm, I noticed he gave them time, his undivided attention, honesty, and kindness. Sometimes these people mentioned to me how much they valued my dad for his integrity, and gladly passed his name on to others.
I also studied my dad when he interacted with people with few financial re-sources, those who looked at aged cars in the remote part of the dealer's lot. His approach never changed. He gave them the same time, undivided attention, honesty, and kindness. They, too, referred him to others.
His example was one reason I committed to give the same intensity of focus and kindness to people of all economic classes and racial backgrounds. I know my son is watching.
