Pulling the Plug on Dallas
Theme of the Week: Ambition
Kenny Luck
Tuesday, August 24, 2004

Key Bible Verse: It is useless for you to work so hard from early morning until late at night, anxiously working for food to eat (Psalm 127:2). Bonus Reading:Psalm 127:1—5

I remember sitting in a Dallas hotel room, staring at a picture of my first child, Cara, and thinking about how I needed to keep a journal for her because I was traveling so much. It was nine o'clock at night, and I was still in my suit.

My company had acquired our competitor, and I was part of the new operations team. I enjoyed being part of a merger because that was where the "action" was. I was now solidly on the "inside" of the senior management team—something for which I'd worked very hard. But I'd been commuting to Dallas during the week and coming home to Southern California on weekends for the past five months.

Deep down, I knew I was hurting my relationship with my bride, Chrissy, and our new baby. It hurt to miss so many "firsts" with my daughter. Gazing down at the empty journal, I knew what I had to do. I took a deep breath and dialed the executive vice president.

"I can't do this anymore," I said into the phone while the VP listened to me talk about how much I missed my family.

"Okay, let's meet for lunch tomorrow and talk about it," he said. [continued 8/25]

My Response: How might my God-given drive to achieve be misdirected or out of balance?

Thought to Apply: By the time we make it, we've had it.
