Coming Clean Theme of the Week: Crooked or Straight? Hudson Armerding Monday, August 30, 2004

Key Bible Verse: "Be just and fair to all," says the Lord. "Do what is right … Blessed are those who are careful to do this" (Isaiah 56:1—2). Bonus Reading:Isaiah 33:14—16
While I was speaking at a retreat, one attendee asked to talk privately with me. He was heavily in debt and for many months had been manipulating his accounts so his creditors and the bank wouldn't know. His obligation had grown too heavy. But he feared telling his bankers the truth because he was sure they'd call in his notes, bankrupting and disgracing him. Then how could he provide for his family?
I urged him to confess, trusting God to take care of him afterward. I promised to pray for him. He thanked me, but left still a miserable man.
A few weeks later a letter came. One evening, his wife wrote, the whole family got on their knees and asked the Lord to give the husband/ father courage to do what he knew was right.
Then he asked for an appointment with the bank president. He confessed his deception. Seeing something worthy of confidence in his character, the president decided to give him a chance. They worked out a line of credit and debt repayment plan.
The following spring I saw a changed man. No longer having to worry whether he'd be found out, he was learning to count on God's providence.
