When I went off to college, the people who loved me feared for me. They feared that the people I'd meet and the books I'd read would change me. They wanted me to hold on to that simple gospel that had brought me to salvation.
I didn't tell the folks back home when, as part of a course in modern American history, I started reading the works of a primary voice for the Social Gospel. He was persona non grata to the Christian community that nurtured me. Yet, here I was being thrilled by his stuff. His insight that the Kingdom of God was a new social order that God was even now establishing hit me like a bolt of lightning and changed the way I read the Scriptures.
I came to understand that Jesus was about establishing His Lordship over a people through whom He could attack the injustices of society. I recognized that Jesus' parables were messages about His Kingdom and that He initiated His ministry by declaring that the Kingdom of God was at hand. Most of all, I learned to pray the Lord's prayer with vigor; especially the line that speaks, "Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth …"
