Key Bible Verse: I am counting on the Lord; yes, I am counting on him. I have put my hope in his word (Psalm 130:5). Bonus Reading:Isaiah 43:1–7
In 1970, I sat on a bunk in an army barracks and silently cried out to God. I'd just received my orders to Vietnam. "Lord, you know I love and trust you. You've been good to me. But I'm angry now and afraid. Vietnam!"
Soon I sensed God speaking to me, not with audible words but inaudible ones. The core message was: "I trust you with this. I'll be with you in a powerful way. I plan to spread My gospel through you to men who'll be desperate to hear from Me."
Gradually, my mental grinding gave way to acceptance. I felt God empowering me to accept going to Viet-nam, knowing acceptance is not the same as approval. I didn't need to approve of the war or my going there.
Interestingly, upon arriving in Vietnam, I had access to a printing press. I wrote a gospel piece three pages long, then printed several thousand copies. With the help of chaplains and friends, they were given to men on Quang Tri base, along the DMZ, at Khe Sanh, and near the Ho Chi Minh Trail.
I also shared Christ with others, especially during guard duty with them in bunkers on the perimeter of our base. God came through in ways I couldn't have predicted.
