'Who Is this Man?'
Theme of the Week: The Reaching-out Risk
Thursday, September 30
Key Bible Verse: Don't try to act important, but enjoy the company of ordinary people (Romans 12:16). Bonus Reading: 2 Corinthians 5:1621
Francis is a follower of Jesus; he's also paranoid schizophrenic and talks to himself all the time. When I first met Francis, about 18 years ago, he was a "street person" living in a tent on the $338 per month he received from the government because of his disability. At that time I gave him some wood that he used as a platform for his tent.
Since then our friendship has grown. Along with my wife, I've brought some small measure of stability and community into his life; Francis, in turn, has brought a lot of humor, affection, and seren-dipitous wisdom into my life. I have challenged Francis in areas of accountability and discipline; his presence in my life has caused me to grow in compassion and humble dependence on God.
Recently, Francis shared several holiday dinners with large gatherings in our home, and it was obvious that my friendship with Francis didn't easily fit into the rest of our relationships. Others were curious: "Who is this man? Why is he here?" I would vouch for my friend, describing this friendship as both a result of my faith and a part of my ongoing growth as a disciple of Jesus.

My Response: Have I ever initiated a reach-out friendship? How could I start?
Thought to Apply: There is no such thing as an insignificant human being. To treat people that way is a kind of sin and there's no reason for it. None. Debbi Fields
