Men of Integrity, September/October 2004

Holy Guacamole!
Theme of the Week: Take God to Work
Sunday, September 5

Who Said It
Tim Downs

After studying Fine Arts at Indiana University, Tim Downs worked for six years as a comic strip artist, creating the nationally syndicated "Downstown." He founded the Communication Center, a training and consulting ministry of Campus Crusade for Christ, and led it for 17 years. Tim continues to serve as a speaker and writer. He and his wife, Joy, lead marriage and parenting conferences. They live in Cary, North Carolina, with their three children.

What He Said
Holy Guacamole!

Imagine hearing someone say, "I've been called to work in middle management at IBM." Wait a minute! You can't say that. You can't be called to secular work; you just choose to work there. God calls only to the spiritual professions, but is strangely disinterested in all the others.

Not according to the Puritans. They taught that all professions are spiritual to the Christian, not because of the nature of the work but because of the presence of God. The ground around the burning bush was ordinary dirt; only the presence of God made it holy. When a Christian—the temple of the Holy Spirit—walks into an office at IBM, IBM becomes a spiritual place.

We need to begin to see our places of employment as places that God cares very much about, as places that God has called us to in order to represent Him. The most secular profession is in a sense something holy. God is as much present behind the counter at Taco Bell as He is in the pastor's study.

Lord, let me know clearly the work that you are calling me to do in life. And grant me every grace I need to answer Your call with courage and love and lasting dedication for Your will. —St. Meinrad
