Smoke-filled Ministry
Theme of the Week: Take God to Work
Wednesday, September 8

Key Bible Verse: And whatever you do or say, let it be as a representative of the Lord Jesus (Colossians 3:17). Bonus Reading: Colossians 3:22–25

In my banking, hospital administration, and financial services jobs in Argentina, I thoroughly enjoyed dealing, buying, selling, and hiring. But the pressure was always on. When things became unmanageable, I'd close the door, kneel by the "Jesus chair," and ask for divine guidance. Repeatedly He provided it.

But well-meaning leaders at church looked down on my occupation. "When are you going to go into the ministry instead of hanging around people who drink and smoke?" they demanded. But when they needed help in matters involving the government, finances, or employment, those same leaders didn't hesitate to ask for my assistance. If I'm so contaminated, I wondered, why are my services solicited so often?

I knew God was with me at work as much as in church. His guidance and intervention were essential to fulfill the mission He'd given me there. Most of my business associates were staunch Catholics in a social class far above most in my church. Quite often I found myself in smoke-filled rooms, praying with them, or at a party, ministering to members of their families. And some received the Lord!

—Ed Silvoso in Anointed for Business

My Response: What results suggest why God has placed me in my work environment?

Thought to Apply: Smiting on an anvil, sawing a beam, whitewashing a wall, driving horses, sweeping … [God] is so great that all things give Him glory if you mean they should. —Gerard Manley Hopkins (English poet)

Lord, let me know clearly the work that you are calling me to do in life. And grant me every grace I need to answer Your call with courage and love and lasting dedication for Your will. —St. Meinrad
