Exposed Theme of the Week: Crooked or Straight? Steve Marr Wednesday, September 1, 2004

Key Bible Verse: "Unless you are faithful in small matters, you won't be faithful in large ones. If you cheat even a little, you won't be honest with greater responsibilities" (Luke 16:10, NLT). Bonus Reading:Luke 16:10—13
Every business risks embarrassing itself by being caught with incorrect scanner pricing, failing to honor a warranty, having to recall a faulty product, or otherwise shortchanging its customers. The best protection against shame is to keep everything above board. Review your policies and procedures, asking, "If our customers could see everything we do, would they be pleased?" If not, you have important work to do.
When a certain business owner received double payments on accounts or overpayments in error, he kept the money as additional income. This went on for 10 years.
Then a buyer approached the owner, offering to buy his business for millions of dollars. The owner thought he had it made. But the buyers conducted an audit, uncovered his dishonesty, and canceled the purchase.
"If you were dishonest all these years with your customers," they told the owner, "what else have you lied about? We've lost confidence in you and your company."
If you handle every job and serve every customer with diligence and honesty, you need never worry that "the truth" may someday come to light.
