Theme of the Week: The Reaching-out Risk
John Sloan
Monday, September 27, 2004

Key Bible Verse: If you are kind only to your friends, how are you different from anyone else? Even pagans do that (Matthew 5:47). Bonus Reading:Matthew 5:43–48

In the spring of 1979, one of coach Tom Landry's friends was at the Dallas Cowboys' practice field and noticed a white-haired man standing off to the side, hands stuffed into his pockets and eyes staring at the ground. His head would pop up every once in a while to watch the practice drills. He looked to Landry's friend like Woody Hayes.

Hayes had racked up one of the top win-loss records in major college football during his 28-year tenure as head coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes. But he was fired following an outburst of anger when he ran onto the field at the end of the 1978 Gator Bowl and slugged a Clemson linebacker who'd just sealed Ohio State's defeat with an interception. Sports and college officials quickly condemned Hayes's reprehensible action. "Isn't that Woody Hayes?" asked Landry's friend incredulously.

Landry looked up from his clipboard. "Yeah, that's Woody," acknowledged Lan-dry in his easy Texas accent.

But the visitor pushed further. "Why is he here?"

"Yeah, he really blew it," came Landry's measured reply. "But he needs to be here. Somebody needs to give him another chance."

My Response: Whom have I "written off"? How should I offer him another chance?
