Back into the Game? Theme of the Week: The Reaching-out Risk Greg Johnson Tuesday, September 28, 2004

Key Bible Verse: Jesus called out to them, "Come, be my disciples, and I will show you how to fish for people!" (Matthew 4:19). Bonus Reading:4:18–22
Before becoming an editor, I'd been a missionary to teenagers through Youth for Christ. But learning a new job and spending too many hours on the L.A. freeways sapped my desire to think about anything beyond my own family. One Saturday, I realized I no longer hungered to spend time with the Lord. When I worked for YFC, my sharing skills were put to the test every day. But now I didn't need as much spiritual food because I wasn't exercising my spiritual gifts.
Once I realized what was going on, I had a choice:
1. Maintain the status quo, convincing myself that my days of converting teens were in the past. Heck, my kids were getting older, and something always needed to be done around the house. Besides, I knew that it usually took months to yield any results with kids. The same went for friends outside the church, but there it could take years before you'd see them turn to Christ. Or
2. Make myself uncomfortable, deciding I needed to be around a few men who swear once in a while.
I told God I meant business, and asked him to put me back into the game. [continued 9/29]

My Response: Am I "in the game"? If not, what would it take to get back in?
Thought to Apply: It is the duty of every Christian to be Christ to his neighbor.
—Martin Luther (German reformer)
