 Men of Integrity, November/December 2004
Weekend Wrap-up
Theme of the Week: Family Glue
Saturday, December 11
Before retelling Jewish national events from the time of slavery in Egypt to David's reign, Asaph gives the reason for his history lesson. He cites God's command (Deuteronomy 6:49) to parents to tell their children stories of His power and requirements of His law "again and again
at home and when you are away
lying down and
getting up." And he explains why this is crucial.
Interact with God's Word
Psalm 78:18
- According to Asaph, how can each generation set its hope anew on God?
- How have you benefited from how your ancestors and parents passed down their faith?
- How is failing to communicate Bible truth equivalent to hiding it (v. 4)?
- What are the results of failing to transmit teaching about faith (v. 8)? Of successfully transmitting it (v. 7)?
- How are you assuring that your children are exposed to the basics of biblical truth?
- In this introduction to 64 verses of historical narrative, Asaph refers to stories, parables, and hidden lessons. Are there clues here about how to convey vital information to youngsters?
Spend Time in Prayer
Ask God to help you make your home a place where biblical truth is transmitted naturally to your family. Ask him to give you the staying power to make this happen consistently.
Psalm 78:1-8
1O my people, listen to my teaching. Open your ears to what I am saying, 2for I will speak to you in a parable. I will teach you hidden lessons from our past 3stories we have heard and know, stories our ancestors handed down to us.
4We will not hide these truths from our children but will tell the next generation about the glorious deeds of the LORD. We will tell of his power and the mighty miracles he did. 5For he issued his decree to Jacob; he gave his law to Israel. He commanded our ancestors to teach them to their children, 6so the next generation might know themeven the children not yet bornthat they in turn might teach their children.
7So each generation can set its hope anew on God, remembering his glorious miracles and obeying his commands. 8Then they will not be like their ancestorsstubborn, rebellious, and unfaithful, refusing to give their hearts to God.
