Wing Man
Theme of the Week: Getting Down and Getting Human
Sunday, December 19
Who Said It James Bryan Smith
Jim is the author of Rich Mullins: An Arrow Pointing to Heaven. He teaches and is chaplain at Friend's University in Wichita, Kansas. Jim's friendship with Rich developed while he attended Friend's University and lived for two years in an attic apartment in the Smith's home.
Rich Mullins, a popular singer and songwriter, left his comfortable lifestyle to live among Native Americans on a New Mexico reservation, and was killed in an auto accident in 1997.
What He Said Wing Man
What a weird thing it would be to be God Almighty and then to become flesh," Rich Mullins exclaimed in an interview. "What would it be like," he wondered, "to have to become a little boy and endure Hebrew school and listen to some rabbi rattle on about something that You wrote before he was ever born?"
Once, when we were talking about his song, "Boy Like You, Man Like Me," I told him that I loved the image of Jesus making "angels in the winter snow."
He said, "You know, I think that's one of the funniest lines I've ever written."
"What's so funny about it?" I asked, puzzled.
"Don't you get it? he asked. "Jesus made the angelsthe real angels."
I was stunned for a moment as I thought about the One who made Michael and Gabriel flopping His hands and feet in the snow. Rich kept looking at me and laughing, and then I laughed. Now I smile every time I hear that line.
