Can Physical Be Spiritual?
Theme of the Week: Getting Down and Getting Human
Tuesday, December 21
Key Bible Verse: Touch me and make sure that I am not a ghost, because ghosts don't have bodies as you see I do! (Luke 24:39) Bonus Reading: 2 Corinthians 1:37
We have a hard time seeing the Lord Jesus in a human bodywhether depicted on film or canvas. We imagine Him as a spirit in heaven at the right hand of God. But we fail to remember that He's embodied there. Yes, it's a resurrected body, but it's a body still, recognized by those who knew Him, both on earth and in heaven.
A few Christmases ago I was introduced to the poetry of Brian Wren, a contemporary hymn writer whose lyrics appear in a Christmas cantata by J. A. C. Redford titled Welcome All Wonders. These lyrics lead us right to the scandal of the Incarnation:
Good is the flesh that the Word has become
good is the birthing, the milk in the breast,
good is the feeding, caressing, and rest
Good is the body for knowing the world,
sensing the sunlight, the tug of the ground,
feeling, perceiving, within and around,
good is the body, from cradle to grave,
Good is the flesh that the Word has become.
Christ becoming human elevates the state of our existence and brings a sacred presence to our natural human lives.
