Dad Wouldn't Quit
Theme of the Week: Family Glue
Sunday, December 5

Who Said It
Tony Evans

Tony is senior pastor of the 5,000-member Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship in Dallas, which he co-founded. He's also president of The Urban Alternative ministry, which offers video programs, a daily and weekly radio show, literature, and church development conferences. Tony has served on the Dallas Theological Seminary staff and written 17 books.

Tony serves as chaplain to the NBA's Dallas Mavericks. He and his wife, Lois, have four children.

What He Said
Dad Wouldn't Quit

My father was gloriously saved when I was 10. But Mom didn't want his religion and made life hard for him. Dad, a longshoreman, would get up at 3 a.m., when the house was quiet, and pray for God to save his family.

A year later, he was up praying and reading his Bible as usual when he heard the steps creak and knew Mom was coming downstairs. Here we go again! he thought. But Mom said, "I've been doing everything I know how to discourage you and make your life miserable. Yet you haven't budged. So this thing must be real. I want it." Dad got on his knees with Mom and led her to Christ. Then they called us kids around the table and told us.

Dad led me to Christ and took our family to church. Humanly speaking, I'm where I am today because Dad became a faithful man of the kingdom who wouldn't give up on his family. I pray you'll leave your family that kind of heritage.
