Are We Having Fun Yet?
Theme of the Week: Family Glue
Jim Burns
Friday, December 10, 2004

Key Bible Verses: Jesus said, "Let's get away from the crowds for a while and rest." … They left … for a quieter spot (Mark 6:31—32). Bonus Reading: Psalm 104:1—35

Our family takes an annual camping trip. The kids don't get so excited now as they used to about sleeping on the ground in a tent for a week. They don't want to leave their friends. But Cathy and I just say, "We're going anyway, and don't forget to pack your swimsuit."

A funny thing happens in the van on our way out of town. The kids begin to leave home behind and enjoy each other's company. After we set up camp, light the fire, eat s'mores, and bring out games we haven't seen for a year, they forget that their blow-dryers don't work here.

Every day Cathy has something special planned. Many days we complain about it, but later have to admit it was fun. Then there's splurge day, when we rent a jet ski, go white-water rafting, take a bike trip, or go out for a nice dinner.

As we camp, we begin to talk, laugh, and lighten up. Inside jokes are shared; serious moments of intimacy are communicated. After Christmas, as we reflect back on the year, you know what always pops up on the list of top three family experiences? The camping trip. Why? Be-cause families need special times together to play together and build lifelong memories.

My Response: I'll plan a block of family time for next year, such as …

Thought to Apply: Sitting around a campfire, walking along a mountain trail, or waiting by a lakeside for the fish to bite, offer never-to-be-duplicated moments to talk on a deeper level with our children.
