Men of Integrity, November/December 2004

Notable
Theme of the Week: Gratitude Attitude
Friday, November 26

Key Bible Verse: How I thank God through Jesus Christ for each one of you (Romans 1:8). Bonus Reading: Romans 1:8-12

I have had some wonderful friends over the years. Billy Webb is one of them. He grew up in a solid home in middle Tennessee, the youngest of three kids. Billy has a terrific sense of humor. His stories, mostly about himself, are legendary. He's an extraordinarily successful businessman.

But something else about Billy set him apart from the rest of my friends. It took me a while to figure out what makes Billy so special.

One day, as I was opening my mail, it hit me. Billy is a thank-you note man, one of those who still believes in handwritten thank-you's. Since the very first time we got together for lunch until our most recent outing, I've always received something in the mail from him a few days later. It's never long and drawn out. In fact, it usually would fit on one side of a four-by-six card. But with these notes, Billy is telling me "thank you." Even when he's picked up the tab for lunch, he thanks me for my time and for my friendship.

After receiving a few of these, I went out and bought my very own thank-you cards with my name printed at the top so I could be a "Billy Webb" in the lives of other men, just like Billy has been in mine.

My Response: A way to affirm others that would fit me is …

Thought to Apply: Let us be grateful to people who make us happy-they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom.—MARCEL PROUST (French novelist)
