River Test Theme of the Week: What Model Are You? Dennis Gibson Wednesday, November 10, 2004
 1 of 1

Key Bible Verse: Be an example to all believers…in the way you live, in your love, your faith, and your purity (1 Timothy 4:12). Bonus Reading: Titus 2:14
The summer I turned 14, Dave Russell was my camp counselor. He claimed Jesus as lord of his life and recommended that we boys of Mohawk cabin do the same.
One afternoon we went canoeing on the narrow, twisting Deerskin River. My partner and I were making it all right. But Dave had in the bow of his canoe the clumsiest kid in camp, Wally. When they got their canoe stuck sideways in the stream, Dave patiently told Wally to lift his paddle from the left side of the canoe and put it into the water on the right.
Most guys would have shifted that paddle in front of them. Not Wally. To avoid some brush ahead, he lifted the paddle high over his head behind him. As he reached for the handle with his right hand, he missed, the paddle slipped out of his grasp, and its flat blade fell on Daves head with a resounding thwock.
Would Dave burst out with a string of profanity like every man Id ever known? Although the color rose up Daves neck, he paused and then said gently, Come on, Wally. Lets try again. That Spirit-enabled self-control opened this campers mind to the message that Dave said mattered most to him.

My Response: Who may be evaluating my faith by observing my actions?
Thought to Apply: If you want your neighbor to see what Christ will do for him, let him see what Christ has done for you.
