Key Bible Verse: "I have never coveted anyone's money or fine clothing". (Acts 20:33). Bonus Reading: Ecclesiastes 5:10-11
Married after I'd finished my junior year in college, my wife and I were initiated into a new world. The campus married couples shared a spiritual camaraderie as we met weekly for a Bible study in the simple apartments or small homes on the "other side of the tracks" we lived in. Our furnishings were modest—dinettes purchased at yard sales and couches passed on by parents. Refreshments were simple, too—usually cookies and Kool-Aid served in paper cups.
One week we were hosted by a young freshman couple I didn't know well. I was surprised to discover that they lived in a beautiful home. Parked in the driveway was a gleaming new pick-up truck, and just as I was noticing it, the husband rode up on a motorcycle that had all the "bells and whistles." As I walked into their home, I was impressed by the elaborate furnishings and the well-appointed décor. Among other things, I noticed the ornate sofa and the shiny black grand piano.
How could they afford all this? I wondered, as the wife served me my drink in a pewter goblet and my hors d'oeuvre on a matching plate. [continued 11/17]

My Response: Does observing the lifestyle of a prosperous person put a dent in my contentment?
Thought to Apply: There is no dignity quite so impressive, and no independence quite so important, as living within your means.
