My Hall of Fame Theme of the Week: What Model Are You? Phil Callaway Monday, November 8, 2004

Key Bible Verse: Mark out a straight path for your feet. Then those who follow you …will not stumble and fall but will become strong (Hebrews 12:13). Bonus Reading: Matthew 23:1–7, 25–26
When John Lennon, the ex-Beatle, was shot in New York City back in 1980, he left behind him $530 million.
But what did he really leave behind? His son Julian said in a recent interview, "My dad was a hypocrite. He could talk about peace and love out loud to the world, but he could never show it to those who supposedly meant the most to him, his wife and son." Lennon left his first wife, Cynthia, and son Julian when the child was five. "The only thing he taught me," Julian told Time magazine, "was how not to be a father."
Recently, at a team chapel, I spoke with a major league ball team. I talked about true success. The men listened carefully, and, for a few of them, the tears started to come. These were men who'd reached the pinnacle of "success," but their questions about life were the same as mine. I asked them, "Who would be in your Hall of Fame?" "My mom," one said. "A teacher who encouraged me," said another.
The people we remember are not the ones with the most credentials or the most cash. They're the ones who loved us enough to care. They stood firm and gave us an example to follow.
