Running a Red Light
Theme of the Week: God's Purpose Made Personal
Thursday, January 6

Key Bible Verse: "Do not be like a senseless horse or mule that needs a bit and bridle to keep it under control" (Psalm 32:9). Bonus Reading: Psalm 32:6-11

Before I factored God into my life, I thought I could figure out the best course of action at any given time by myself. It never dawned on me that God might have an opinion—and that His might be the only one that counted! I'm not only talking about decisions that lead to sin, but about decisions concerning marriage, career, financial investments, and other important areas of life.

Sometimes I saw a red light but chose to run right through it. I acted on my desires and goals, even when logic, common sense, and an inner voice were stacked against them. So there were a number of broadside collisions in my life!

For the past several years, I haven't made a major decision without getting a green light from God. How do I know when the light is green? Trust me, when you've chosen God as your Master, you know. Some call it a sharp pang of conscience. Others call it a strong urging or prompting in the spirit.

I always ask God for guidance. If I'm not absolutely sure in my heart that I'm going down the path the Lord wants me to travel, I don't go.

—Dan Patrick in The Second Most Important Book You'll Ever Read

My Response: Does my desire to know God's will include a willingness to wait?

Thought to Apply: When we fail to wait prayerfully for God's guidance, we're saying with our actions, if not our lips, that we don't need him.—CHARLES HUMMEL
