Unwarped Time
Theme of the Week: What Do You Expect?
Wednesday, April 27, 2005

Key Bible Verse: The disciples asked each other, "What does he mean when he says 'You won't see me, and then you will see me'? And … 'I am going to the Father'? and what does he mean by 'a little while'?" (John 16:17-18). Bonus Reading: Psalm 90:1-12

Will there be "time" in heaven? An old gospel song speaks of "when the trumpet of the Lord shall sound and time shall be no more."

Because God is immortal and unchanging ["the eternal King, the unseen one who never dies" (1 Timothy 1:17), and "I am the Lord, and I do not change" (Malachi 3:6)], and because heaven is eternal, the frequent assumption is that time will not be part of its makeup.

However, there is no biblical basis for such an assumption. Though night will be overtaken by constant day, that is not to say that there will not be a sequencing of events, one after the other.

John's revelations suggest that events will occur in the new creation. For that to be, some sort of time element must exist. John describes the tree of life as "bearing twelve crops of fruit, with a fresh crop each month" (Revelation 22:2).

There is a sense that in heaven we will be aware of the quality and quantity of time even though it may be an everlasting present in which time is stretched out with no past or future.

0Prayer for the Week

Give me a hint, Lord, of the splendor You've prepared for me when I graduate from this life.
