I stood helpless behind the young Mexican who was trying to pay for the gasoline he'd just pumped into the faded red pickup truck. It was overloaded with other Spanish-speaking men ready to head out to work as day laborers on a construction job or in fields to help produce a harvest on the farms that still cover 60 percent of our Tennessee county.

The attendant at the counter was screaming at the young man, demanding that he communicate in English. That was an acceptable desire, but his being so angry and out of control reinforced what I found out later. The white man at the counter hated Mexican people. He felt that they were an inferior people from an inferior culture. I wished I spoke Spanish so I could translate into English a defense of the young man who was clearly upset and frustrated by simply trying to pay the right amount of money, and who wanted to get away from the scene as quickly as possible.

A loving act toward the growing minority cultures of North America could be to learn the language of the group most dominant in your area. God might call some of His children to study a language to prepare them to love better.
