Men of Integrity, July/August 2005

Now There's a Promise Keeper!
Theme of the Week: Semper Fi
Thursday, August 25

Key Bible Verse: Without wavering, let us hold tightly to the hope we say we have, for God can be trusted to keep his promise (Hebrews 10:23). Bonus Reading: 2 Peter 3:3-15a

A boy's dad dropped him off at a street corner. He told his son to be back there in half an hour when he returned. But the father's car broke down, and he couldn't get back at the appointed time. In fact, hours went by. The father worried that his son might be frightened, wondering where he was. When he finally returned, he hugged his son, apologized profusely, and asked, "Weren't you worried?" The boy answered, "No, Dad. You said you'd come, and I knew you would."

God has never failed to keep a promise. Noah waited 120 years for the worldwide flood. Abraham and Sarah waited some 30 years for the son promised to them. The people of Israel waited 40 years in the wilderness before they entered the Promised Land. The Jewish people waited again, this time for 70 years, during the Babylonian captivity. The Old Testament prophets proclaimed Christ's first coming 500 to 1,000 years before God fulfilled His promise. In every case, God fulfilled His promise. The rise and fall of kingdoms didn't stop Him. Neither could the passage of time stop Him. No matter what the promise, we can count on God to fulfill it.

—Nick Harrison & Steve Miller in Survival Guide for New Dads

My Response: If I'm really counting on God, what worry should I let go of?

Thought to Apply: There is a living God. He means what He says and will do all He promised. —J. HUDSON TAYLOR (British missionary to China)
