Who Said It…Gordon MacDonald
Gordon, a pastor for more than 40 years, also served briefly as president of InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. That's when he stumbled morally. His Rebuilding Your Broken World shares lessons from his restoration process. He's currently an editor-at-large for Leadership Journal and the chairman of World Relief. Gordon can often be found hiking the mountains of New England with this wife, Gail, or their five grandchildren.
What He Said…Up Periscope
I recently spoke to a conference for worship leaders. No one there exceeded the age of 35—except me. So I began by telling about the small group my wife, Gail, and I meet with to share about our lives. "One subject," I told them, "never fails to come to the table each month. Know what that subject is?"
I waited to let people guess. Then I told them: "Death!" I could sense their incredulity; when you're in your 20s and 30s, you rarely talk about death. "Know why?" I continued. "Because we're all in our 60s and 70s, and we're sure that death is a high probability for one of us in the near future. The most important questions in your lives are about career, willpower, and relationships. Those questions no longer interest me personally."
You won't be asking the same questions ten years from now that you're asking today. Knowing what you're likely to face gives you an understanding of how to build a larger view of your life.
