Men of Integrity, September/October 2005

The Wind-up
Theme of the Week: Inspired Elbow Grease
Thursday, September 8

Key Bible Verse: Work with enthusiasm, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people (Ephesians 6:7). Bonus Reading: Ecclesiastes 5:18-20

Bill Slemp joined the army straight out of high school, then got a job with Frigidaire, running a huge machine that wrapped copper wire around armatures, the spinning internal mechanisms that drive electric motors. "Sure it was tedious," Bill says. "But winding armatures was what they were paying me to do, and I wanted them to get their money's worth."

Months passed. But he stayed focused on his tedious assignment. Laggards around him were being elevated to foremen. Now he was working for former colleagues who didn't deserve their promotions. "I did wonder how these guys were being awarded better-paying jobs," Bill admits. "But that was okay. I couldn't be derailed from becoming the best armature maker ever."

One afternoon a man walked up to his work station. "Excuse me, Bill, but could you please come with me?" Bill recognized the man as a senior supervisor. "I was surprised he knew my name," Bill recalls. He followed the man off the noisy factory floor, down a long hallway, and into a paneled boardroom. Men in suits surrounded a massive table. Bill, feeling incredibly underdressed, was invited to sit down. [continued 9/9]

My Response: Does the quality of my work depend on my prospects for promotion?

Thought to Apply: There is a kind of victory in good work, no matter how humble. —JACK KEMP (football player, politician)
