The 50s Are About Doubts
Theme of the Week: Questions You'll Face
Gordon MacDonald
Thursday, September 15, 2005

Key Bible Verse: I long for the years gone by when God took care of me, when he lighted the way before me (Job 29:2). Bonus Reading: Job 29:1-30:1

Fifty-somethings would rather not think about it, but they've moved across life's middle. Now one finds himself wondering Why is time moving so fast? The news of friends dying, marriages dissolving, people moving to places of retirement increases. How many years are left?

It seems as if yesterday was Christmas, and tomorrow is Christmas. Go figure! Contemporaries suddenly look very old to us. Surely we haven't aged that much! Why is my body becoming unreliable? How do I deal with my failures and my successes? How can my wife and I reinvigorate our relationship now that the children are gone?

Who are these young people who want to replace me? It's a frightening moment when one discovers that younger people may know more than me, may be willing to work longer and harder than I'm willing to work, and may be impatient for me to move over and give them the same chance to prove themselves that I once demanded.

What do I do with my fears? Will we have enough money for the retirement years if there are health problems and economic downturns? These questions loom in our fifties.

—Gordon MacDonald in A Resilient Life

My Response: Have I faced these questions? Should I get a head start on them?

Thought to Apply: The man who views the world at 50 the same as he did at 20 has wasted 30 years of his life. —MUHAMMAD ALI (professional boxer)
