Secure Cliffhanging Theme of the Week: Declaration of Dependence Stuart Briscoe Tuesday, September 20, 2005
 1 of 1

Key Bible Verse: This confidence is like a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls (Hebrews 6:19). Bonus Reading: Hebrews 6:13-20
When I was in the British marines, training for commandos included cliff assaults. The theory was that a surprise raid should be launched as quickly and silently as possible on the area most lightly defended because attack was least expected there. Usually that would be the cliffs.
We'd come close to a cliff in our small boats and fire a rocket up through the darkness. The rocket propelled a grapnel with a light rope attached. We'd pull back gently on the rope until the grapnel caught on something we hoped was secure.
A skilled climber would scale the cliff in the dark, hanging onto this thin rope like a spider and trailing a bigger rope behind him. Below, we held onto the rope. When the climber reached the top, he'd secure the rope he'd taken up, then give two little tugs on it. As soon as the tugs came, we'd jumped out of our boats and scale the cliffs. It was a hairy experience. But we had utter confidence in the one who'd gone ahead of us.
Jesus is called "the one who has gone before," or in the Greek, the prodomos. The prodomos was a person who headed a military patrol, making sure the way was clear.

My Response: What can I do to keep my eyes on Jesus today?
Thought to Apply: The more we depend on God, the more dependable we find He is. —CLIFF RICHARD (British pop singer)
