Flying on Instruments
Theme of the Week: Declaration of Dependence
Jerome Daly
Friday, September 23, 2005

Key Bible Verse: If you are walking in darkness, without a ray of light, trust in the Lord and rely on your God (Isaiah 50:10). Bonus Reading: Psalm 42:1-11; 43:1-5

My father was an air force pilot during the Vietnam War and occasionally recalled the challenge of flying, not by sight, but by what your instruments tell you. What you feel in the air isn't always reliable; disorientation is customary for pilots, which is why they have to learn to trust their machines. When they don't trust them, they tend to die.

The artificial horizon on the attitude indicator tells the pilot how the plane is oriented—whether he's banking to one side or level. The altimeter tells him how high he is, and the airspeed indicator tells him how fast he's moving. Together with his compass, these four electronic gizmos can get him safely back on the ground even in the blindness of fog.

When the fog rolls into your life, Jesus Christ has never been more committed to redeeming your circumstances. He hasn't abandoned you; you just have to learn how to fly on instruments. When you can't see in the thick fog, you can more clearly hear His whisper—I love you. I'm with you. Don't be afraid. Trust Me … learn from Me. If you do, you'll come out on the other side that much closer to Me and My promises over your life!

—Jerome Daly in When God Waits

My Response: Am I flying by sight or by faith right now?

Thought to Apply: All I have seen teaches me to trust the Creator for all I have not seen.—RALPH WALDO EMERSON (pastor & writer)
