From Glance to Gaze
Theme of the Week: Targeted for Temptation?
Robert Wolgemuth
Thursday, September 29, 2005

Key Bible Verse: Anyone who even looks at a woman with lust in his eye has already committed adultery with her in his heart (Matthew 5:28). Bonus Reading: Matthew 5:29-30

Twenty years ago I worked on the second floor of a new office building. My desk faced the front window overlooking the parking lot. Early one day, I looked up from by desk in time to see a woman walking from her car into the building. She looked like a model. Her face and her body were flawless. Her stride was silky and strong. My heart raced as I watched until she disappeared into the building directly under my window.

Wow, I thought to myself, I wonder who THAT is.

The next morning, quite by accident, something caught my eye again. I looked up and saw the same woman walking from her car. My eyes didn't leave her until she was out of sight once more.

For the next few mornings, the woman's appearance was no longer a surprise. I watched for her. I waited for her. I stood at the window to get a better look. During the day, my mind would drift back to her. I began to think about how I might meet her—perhaps wait for her and act as though I was leaving the building as she approached. I had allowed my mind to go too far.

I had crossed the line, and I knew it. [continued 9/30]

My Response: Could my commitment to purity be undermined by my fantasies?

Thought to Apply: He who would not fall off the precipice mustn't venture too near the edge. —FRANCES ROBERTS

0Prayer for the Week

Preserve me, Lord, from the stupidity of craving what You, for my protection, have placed off-limits.
