Often in therapy I'll ask a man, "Do you want to make your marriage a lot better, real fast?" "Oh, yeah, Doc. Can you give me a pill for that?"
"No, but I can give you a simple secret that can transform your relationship."
"Really? Go ahead. Hit me."
"Okay, you can revolutionize your relationship with that woman if you'll simply figure out what's going on inside you and then learn how to express it in words in an accurate way."
"That's it? That's all? Do you really think that will make a difference?"
"Guaranteed."
"I can do that!"
It may take some time and practice. But if he does it, she'll think she has a new man! There's not a woman in the world who doesn't enjoy having a man tell her what's going on inside his head. Why? Because that's how she gets to know him. This is how they begin to weave the fabric of their relationship, weaving him and her together so there's a them. That's what love is all about.
