Arriving home from a hard day at work, you may not feel ready for "small talk." But it's a must. Your wife urgently needs it for three reasons:
To build rapport. A woman does this by reporting on her day. And having you report on your day is important to her. You don't have to give every detail of the day. But go over a few highlights, a certain happening, something that will make her feel connected with the most important person in her life.
To release her emotions. As a man, you're compartmentalized. You can stuff things away and not have to talk about them. But a woman's personality is integrated. Like a teakettle, she collects all the things that have happened to her over the day, and there's a buildup. Releasing these feelings really can't wait until tomorrow. When you give her a chance to "let off steam," she'll feel better—and loved.
To process her feelings. A woman can be feeling a lot of things but not know exactly what they are. As she talks to you about what happened through the day, she can work back to the problem she can't seem to put her finger on. It clarifies things for her; then she feels understood.
