Even-Handed?
Theme of the Week: The Truth About Tolerance
Voddie Baucham Jr.
Monday, February 20, 2006

Key Bible Verse: Obviously, I'm not trying to be a people pleaser! No, I am trying to please God (Galatians 1:10). Bonus Reading: Galatians 1:6-10

Tolerance claims to consider all views and practices as equals. But this is simply not the case.

For example, tolerant people are expected to view all religions as equally valid. So anyone who doesn't adopt their view that all roads lead to God is deemed undesirable. Therefore Christianity and Islam, among others, are considered inferior to more tolerant religions. But remember, valuing all religions equally is supposed to be the essence of tolerance. There's a logical problem here!

Consider this statement: "We value all trees equally, but trees that drop leaves in the yard have to go because they cause inconvenience." What an inept position!

Imagine Consumer Reports being attacked because it rates one automobile over another. If consumers' ratings can rank vehicles and appliances based on their performance and ability to deliver on their claims without being considered "intolerant" toward the inferior products, why can't religions?

Because the key component of modern tolerance is people's freedom to believe and behave as they choose without being subjected to the ire of those who disagree.

My Response: Can I be loving while vigorously disagreeing with someone? Will I be viewed that way?

Please teach me, Lord, how to remain unwavering in my allegiance to what Your Word declares without coming across as arrogant.
