Men of Integrity, January/February 2006

Sinking Feeling
Theme of the Week: Mixed Signals
Friday, January 13

Key Bible Verse: Dear brothers and sisters, you are foreigners and aliens here. So I warn you to keep away from evil desires because they fight against your very souls (1 Peter 2:11). Bonus Reading: Ephesians 2:1-7

Each year a Sunday school class I once belonged to polled its members to determine what was the "best experience" they'd shared. That year our class pitched in on a Habitat for Humanity construction project. We also helped with a clothing exchange and a soup kitchen. Some did hospice work. Others together pulled up weeds around the church property. But in the end, the number one fellowship experience of the year—drum roll, please—was watching the movie Titanic together at a local theater.

Christians, like everyone else, need the grace of God, and I'm no plaster saint perched sinless on someone's dashboard. I like my entertainment. But thinking back on our class's fascination with Hollywood's version of the Titanic disaster, I wondered what lots of us Christians really, truly want in this life?

Do we hope for all the glitz—and heaven too? Do we, like so many around us, crave fantasy so much that, like so many celebrities, we want our every whim indulged, while we picture God smiling on us like some harmless grandfather? Or do we, as 1 Peter 2:11 urges us, resist the seductive tug of the world?

—Jim O'Donnell in Indiana

My Response: To counteract the appeal of worldly entertainment, I need to …

Thought to Apply: We've learned to live with unholiness, looking upon it as natural and expected.—A.W. TOZER
