Intelligent design is a full-fledged scientific theory, distinguishing it from a long line of design arguments by philosophers and theologians, traditionally called natural theology. It requires no leap of faith. This is because the related concepts of specified complexity and irreducible complexity [explained in the next readings] render intelligent causes empirically detectable. Intelligent design (ID) takes a long-standing philosophical intuition and cashes it out as a scientific research program. It builds on advances in fields such as probability theory, computer science, molecular biology, and philosophy of science, to demonstrate this rigorously. According to ID, the world contains events, objects, and structures that go beyond what can be explained by undirected natural causes. They can be adequately explained only by recourse to intelligent causes.
