Men of Integrity, March/April 2006

Taking the Rap
Theme of the Week: My Substitute
Monday, April 10

Key Bible Verse: For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ (2 Corinthians 5:21). Bonus Reading: 2 Corinthians 5:18-6:2

John, who was serving his prison term as head cook, stole some chicken to make himself an extra sandwich. He was due to be released soon and the theft, if traced to him, would extend his term by a couple of months. Walter, his Christian friend who worked in the pot room, got blamed. John had left the chicken bones there after making his sandwiches. The disciplinary report issued for Walter meant he must do extra duty and serve extra time.

Feeling bad for Walter, John told him that he'd done it. "I'll turn myself in and get you off the hook."

Walter shook his head. "No, don't," he said. "You're going home next week; I'm in for years—so what's a couple more months?"

"This must be the first time someone pardoned and rewarded the guy who wronged him," said John in awe.

"No," Walter responded quietly, "it's not. After we sinned against God, Jesus did just that when He gave up His life. When we trust in Him, we're pardoned and rewarded with eternal life."

Walter received a postcard from John after his release. "Thanks to you," it said, "I've received the pardon that brings eternal life." The front of the card pictured Christ.

My Response: If I had not been pardoned, what sentence would I deserve?
