Men of Integrity, March/April 2006

Warner's Brothers
Theme of the Week: Church Is Something You Do
Monday, April 24

Key Bible Verse: But you know how Timothy has proved himself. Like a son with his father, he has helped me in preaching the Good News (Philippians 2:22). Bonus Reading: 1 Corinthians 3:5-9, 16

The St. Louis Rams surprised the sports world by winning the Super Bowl in January 2000. No one picked them to do much that year, but an unknown guy named Kurt Warner led them to win their sport's top prize.

A friend of mine wondered how many people it really took to win the Super Bowl besides the 11 offensive and 11 defensive starters. He pulled up the Rams' web site and discovered that the team carried 53 players led by 17 coaches. That's not all. The team had 35 cheerleaders to keep fan support high. And the front office had 108 employees—from team president to financial officers to advertising specialists to vendor experts. So a total of 210 workers were directly involved in winning the Super Bowl for the Rams!

When we see a thriving, alive-in-the-Spirit church, we're inclined to give the pastor all the credit. But just as no football team could win a Super Bowl with just a coach, so no church can have a successful ministry without plenty of personal involvement. It needs worship team members and teachers and bulletin folders and parking lot attendants and financial experts and outreach workers. It takes a strong team of supporting players to produce a winner.

My Response: What role, even a behind-the-scenes position, could I play in my church?

Father, Your Son gave His life for the church. Teach me, as His follower, to care deeply about it too.
