Back in the 1980s when the Edmonton Oilers won the Stanley Cup, Russell and a friend fabricated press passes and sneaked into the Oilers' locker room after a game seven victory. They drank champagne from the cup. They celebrated with the boys. Then they stole two items. One of them was Wayne Gretzky's helmet. For years the helmet adorned Russell's business, a trophy of his own wayward lifestyle. One day Russell heard of Jesus, and repented of his sins. But the helmet remained.
I met Russell after speaking at a church and when he told me his story, I grinned and said, "Hey, give Wayne his helmet back."
Yesterday I received an email from Russell. He'd written Gretzky, telling him he was a Christian now and asking Wayne's forgiveness. "Tell me where to send the helmet," said Russell.
Wayne wrote back, saying he was deeply touched. "Keep the helmet," he said. "Give it to your son." The joy of doing the right thing is a trophy that will not tarnish or fade.
