Fork in the Road
Theme of the Week: Facing My Messy Side
Andy Cook
Monday, April 3, 2006

Key Bible Verse: People who cover their sins will not prosper. But if they confess and forsake them, they will receive mercy (Proverbs 28:13).Bonus Reading: Psalm 32:1-7

It was a borrowed pickup and pitchfork. The turn was taken too quickly. The fork slid across the open tailgate and landed in the middle of traffic. In my rearview mirror I saw cars swerving into the oncoming lane of traffic, and a string of brake lights. Then it hit me. Some idiot had dropped a pitchfork on the road—me!

Since the pitchfork was borrowed, I couldn't just leave it there. So I circled the block and returned. By the time I pulled up to the stop sign, two drivers had stopped to remove the hazard. They were obviously talking about the close call on the busy street, and shaking their heads at careless drivers like me. If they'd only leave, I thought, I'd grab that fork and run. No one would know.

The traffic behind me was pushing me to make a decision. Turn right, and I'd go right past the two, and they'd spot me. I'd have to apologize and sheepishly reclaim the instrument of my wrongdoing. I'd certainly have to endure a lecture.

I turned left, took the long way across town, hoping the pitchfork would be there later, when no one would know about the man who forgets to close tailgates. Hours later, it was still there. Under the cover of darkness, I reclaimed my forked failure.
