Bad Chemistry
Theme of the Week: Facing My Messy Side
Charles Baldwin
Tuesday, April 4, 2006

Key Bible Verse: "The human heart is most deceitful and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is?"(Jeremiah 17:9).Bonus Reading: Mark 7:20-23

The scholarship work study to the far-off University of Corpus Christi was my only hope for college, so I took it. When I registered, I had no idea what to list as my major. "Choose something challenging," my basketball coach had urged. So I wrote down the subject for which I'd received my lowest high-school grade: chemistry.

The work study covered my expenses, but I had to work 35 to 40 hours a week. I drove a school bus three times a day for the campus elementary school and cleaned part of the school building after my last bus run.

Besides the work, I was adjusting to a full course load that included pre-calculus, a beginning engineering course, and chemistry. Most frustrating was having to leave midway through each chemistry lab period to make my last bus run of the day. As soon as I finished the run, I hurried back to finish the lab assignment before rushing off to clean the elementary school.

Most nights I finished long after sunset. This schedule soon began to take its toll. One day, in a desperate, misguided effort to keep up with the rest of the class, I fabricated data on a chemistry lab report and manufactured accompanying calculations. [continued 4/05]
