Men of Integrity, March/April 2006

Close Call
Theme of the Week: Preplan Your Defense
Friday, March 31

Key Bible Verse: She kept putting pressure on him day after day, but … he kept out of her way as much as possible (Genesis 39:10). Bonus Reading: Genesis 39:1-12

She was always there. Tall, thin, vivacious, a striking brunette with huge brown eyes that spoke of forbidden things. When I worked late, she worked late in the cubicle across from mine. If I mentioned coming in early the next morning, she'd be there. She coyly refused the advances of all the single guys in the office. But me, a married man, she pursued with the determination of a she-wolf on the trail of a wounded stag.

The temptation was so strong, so flattering. Why was she after me, an ordinary guy? My marriage and the respect of my children were twisting in the winds of temptation. But I could almost literally hear the words of God: "Touch her, and you're done."

I prayed for strength to resist. I changed my work schedule to make sure I was never alone with her. I spoke often to her of my love for my wife and family. I told her of my relationship with God, and my resolve to avoid the things that displease Him. Gradually, the flood tide of temptation turned and receded.

Years have gone by. My marriage has flourished; I enjoy the love, admiration, and respect of my children and grandchildren. And to think that I was once tempted to throw it all away for a taste of forbidden fruit!

—Mike Raether in Montana

My Response: What will my life look like long-term if I yield to sexual sin? How will it look if I avoid it?

Thought to Apply: Better shun the bait than struggle in the snare.—JOHN DRYDEN (English poet)
