Men of Integrity, May/June 2006

Popping the Question
Theme of the Week: Let's Get Real
Monday, June 26

Key Bible Verse: Whoever walks with the wise will become wise; whoever walks with fools will suffer harm (Proverbs 13:20). Bonus Reading: Psalm 37:30-31

"I am out here on my own!" I whined. "Where are those older men who'll offer guidance and perspective? Why doesn't anyone want to mentor me?"

"Jeff," my wife Mindy asked, "have you ever prayed for a mentor or asked anyone to mentor you?"

"Well, um … not really. But, I'll try it," I told her, only half-believing my prayer would be answered.

Three weeks later I found myself sitting across the table from Bruce, an experienced entrepreneurial leader, author, and consultant. He didn't have mentor written across his forehead; but it was clear. "Bruce," I nervously asked, "This may seem like a strange question, but would you be open to keep meeting together? Maybe in kind of a mentoring relationship? I'm learning so much by being with you. I'd love to continue this relationship."

He thought for a moment. I held my breath. "Jeff," he said, "I'd be honored."

Almost six years later, Bruce is still a very close friend and mentor, meeting with me every couple of months and talking on the phone about every two weeks.

Most mentors don't just come to us, and you usually won't stumble upon them. They're sought out.

My Response: Whom should I ask for regular interaction—or to whom should I offer it?

Lord, help me connect honestly with other men, men who share my desire to take being Your disciple to a new level.
